As I am writing this blog I am waiting to hear from my daughter in Ottawa who became feverish last evening and father-in-law sits in a hospital alone, after breaking his hip and requiring surgery three weeks ago. He will turn 90 this month and we have to make critical decisions on his care from afar. We haven't been able to see him for two weeks. It has definitely been a very trying time not only for us but for everyone. Everyone has a story. From front line workers to your neighbours, everyone knows someone who is affected by COVID 19. My heart goes out to those who are suffering. I wish you all good health, comfort and peace.
We are fortunate here in Canada because our government recognizes that we need to come together if we are going to prevent the spread of this virus. Businesses are doing what they can to help their communities and most everyone is doing their part to prevent the spread of this virus.
So how do we cope? How do we stay sane in the face of something that has caused worldwide devastation?
We can start by focusing on helping others. Our seniors are our most vulnerable population so let's check in on them to make sure they have what they need. Check-in on neighbours who are vulnerable. Sometimes just picking up the phone and reaching out to someone who hasn't heard from you in a while can be uplifting. Let's do our best to support each other and show kindness to others. Let's take care of each other so no one has to suffer alone. Social distancing doesn't mean that we have to be disconnected.
Keep your mind busy. Please don't sit in front of the television all day. Social media can be a good thing if you are using it wisely, but you should limit the time you spend on it. This would be a great time to read a book or start or return to a hobby. Whether you sew, quilt, paint or you do woodworking, this is a good time to start a project or learn a new skill. Take advantage of the free resources that are available to learn something new and remember practice makes perfect.
Teach someone a new skill. If you are an expert at something, your expertise might just be what gets someone through a difficult time.
When we focus on helping others we lighten the burden for everyone. We can get through this together.
