Did you know
Cork is natural, renewable, recyclable, biodegradable and 100% environmentally friendly.
Now more than ever we need to understand how our choices impact the planet and the fashion design industry is no exception. There is an urgency to look to materials that do not harm animals or the environment. Cork is one of those products.
Cork has been around for centuries and it is a green alternative to leather and plastics because it is a natural product that is waterproof, elastic, fire resistant and it floats.
So what exactly is Cork?
Cork is harvested from the bark of cork oak trees. The trees reach maturity after 25 years of growth. The bark is then carefully harvested leaving very little to no waste. Even the powder that is generated from the harvesting process is used in products. The great thing about just removing the bark is that it regenerates through carbon dioxide absorption which contributes to cleaner air and contributes to the fight against global warming. Harvesting can be done every nine years for a maximum of 200 on each tree making this product sustainable for the generation to come.
